American Maritime Officers members working aboard the S/S Cape May in November, here in Norfolk, Va., included Third Assistant Engineer Peter Gold, Second A.E. Chris Porter, Chief Mate Ben Tidwell and First A.E. Timothy Van Pett. Behind the officers are two pieces of equipment the Cape May carried to Guantanamo Bay and North Carolina this year as part of the Navy's Joint Logistics Over the Shore (JLOTS) exercise. The cargo was double-stacked for the exercise, an experimental and successful technique. The Cape May's unique cargo lift elevator is capable of lifting 2000 tons. The elevator has been used to lift and transport tug boats, hovercrafts, military causeway systems and other military lightering equipment. It was upgraded last year. The Cape May is operated by Ocean Duchess Inc. for the Maritime Administration in the Ready Reserve Force fleet. |
