In the aftermath of the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on Jan. 12, a number of vessels were activated and mobilized to aid in relief efforts. The barge carrier Cape May (operated in the MARAD Ready Reserve Force by Ocean Duchess) and the auxiliary crane ship Cornhusker State (operated in the MARAD Ready Reserve Force by Interocean American Shipping) were among those deployed to the devastated nation. The masters of both vessels recently toured the area to view earthquake damage and to see firsthand the impact of the relief cargo delivered by their ships.
