The 112th Congress convened for the first time Wednesday, Jan. 5, marking a change in the majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. In the now Republican-led House, new leaders have taken their positions as chairmen of two key House committees overseeing issues important to the U.S. shipping industry and maritime labor.
Rep. John Mica (R-FL) is the chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives, and Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon (R-CA) is the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. Both Congressmen are strong supporters of the U.S. merchant fleet.
Rep. Mica has served on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee since being elected to the House of Representatives in 1992 and has held the position of ranking Republican for the past four years. As the Republican leader, he sat on all six subcommittees, including the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation.
The House Democratic Caucus named Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV) to serve as the committee's ranking member. Rep. Rahall, who has been an avid ally of the U.S. merchant marine, has been a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for the 34 years he has served in Congress.
Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ), a long-time ally of the U.S.-flag fleet, is now the chairman of the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
House Republicans determined the T&I Committee will have 59 members, down from its membership of 75 in the 111th Congress.
Rep. McKeon is the new chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. Also elected to Congress in 1992, Rep. McKeon has served as the committee's ranking member since June 2009. He still serves as a senior member of the Education and Workforce Committee, where he has held the position of chairman and ranking Republican on the committee.
Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) will serve as ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services committee.
Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO), a strong maritime industry supporter, is now the chairman of the Seapower and Expeditionary Forces Subcommittee of the Armed Services Committee.
