Great Lakes cargo float strong through September


U.S.-flagged lakers in September carried 9.4 million net tons of cargo, an increase of 33.7 percent compared with September 2009.

Iron ore loadings in September totaled 3.9 million net tons, an increase of 81 percent compared with September 2009. Coal loadings were up 17.5 percent, while limestone carriage increased by 11.4 percent.

U.S.-flagged lakers have carried 62.8 million net tons of cargo this year, an increase of 47.5 percent compared with year-to-date totals for September 2009. Iron ore, limestone and coal were all ahead of last year's totals in September. While monthly cargo totals continue to show significant growth and recovery through the 2010 season, the season-to-date and monthly totals for September were 9.2 and 10.8 percent behind five-year average marks for these periods, respectively.
