Ship operating companies that participated in the bidding for Military Sealift Command charters covering a total of 11 maritime prepositioning ships have been notified that MSC will hold discussions with all parties that responded to the initial request for proposals. MSC awarded Maersk Line Limited contracts for four of the five lots in the RFP covering a total of 10 ships. Three companies that were unsuccessful bidders filed protests of the awards.
Indications are Maersk will retain the operating agreements for the USNS GYSGT Fred W. Stockham and the USNS LCPL Roy M. Wheat. Discussions will be held until the end of September regarding lots four and five, which cover a total of eight ships in the RFP, including five ships currently operated by AMO-contracted American Overseas Marine. After discussions have concluded, MSC intends to re-bid lots four and five. According to MSC, the new bids are expected to go out in early October and contracts awarded in early December 2010. The AMO membership will be kept updated as reliable information regarding this process becomes available.
