Construction of the new AMO Headquarters building in Dania Beach, Fla., is expected to be complete in January 2011 with occupancy as soon as February 2011. The project remains on budget, the AMO national secretary-treasurer reported during the regularly scheduled AMO membership meeting in Florida in August.
The headquarters construction project, approved by a majority vote of the AMO membership in a union-wide secret-ballot referendum in August 2009, began with a groundbreaking by AMO members, followed by site preparation in October 2009.
The project encountered slight delays earlier this year as metal-fabricated roofing trusses with a high-velocity wind rating were acquired and installed. Once the building is complete, all departments of the AMO union -- Dispatch, Member Services, Accounting, Editorial and Administration -- will be consolidated under one roof and easily accessible for the convenience of all AMO members.
As AMO vacates its current space adjacent to the AMO Plans complex on West Dixie Highway in Dania Beach, the AMO Safety and Education Plan can proceed with its plans to expand the STAR Center campus.
AMO is doing its part to remain an asset to the commercial landscape of South Florida by seeking LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for the headquarters building. LEED was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. It is a system that provides third party verification that a building was designed and built to provide a healthy and productive place to work, is less costly to operate and maintain, and has a reduced environmental footprint. This is accomplished by improving performance in such areas as energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions and indoor environmental quality.
Updates on the progress of construction will continue to be provided to the membership. Current photos of the building are available online.
