A Transportation Security Administration representative said TSA expects to launch a pilot program by the end of this year to test a variety of card readers for the Transportation Worker Identification Credential program, the Journal of Commerce reported.
TWIC card readers will be needed to read and verify the biometric data stored on the card and clear the holder for unescorted access.
The National Maritime Security Advisory Committee, which advises the Coast Guard on maritime security issues, discussed the TWIC program during a meeting July 22. John Schwartz, assistant director of the TWIC program, said a sufficient number of vendors had submitted information about card readers for testing to begin, according to the report.
Schwartz said prototype readers will undergo several initial capability evaluations, lab and environmental tests before they are field-tested, according to the report.
