Military Sealift Command has awarded charters for 10 maritime prepositioning ships to Maersk Line Limited, adding five new vessels to the American Maritime Officers fleet and providing job and benefit security for AMO officers currently manning five ships covered by the charters.
"This is an extremely positive development for the entire AMO membership," said AMO National President Tom Bethel. "The charter awards for four of the five lots in the request for proposals represent 10 vessels that will be operated under AMO contract, five more than AMO currently mans in the prepositioning programs.
"These are new jobs for AMO and jobs maintained for the AMO members who continue to provide experienced and excellent service in the prepositioning program," Bethel said. "The awards affirm the government's confidence in Maersk Line Limited and in the ability and professionalism of AMO officers."
The request for proposals was divided into five lots. Lots two through five were awarded to Maersk Line Limited.
Lot 2 covers the USNS GYSGT Fred W. Stockham, which had previously been operated by AMSEA but is currently operated by a non-AMO company. Lot 3 covers the USNS LCPL Roy M. Wheat, currently operated by a non-AMO company. Both the USNS Stockham and USNS Wheat are Maritime Prespositioning Force (Enhanced) ships.
Lot 4 covers five Maritime Prepositioning Squadron ships currently operated under AMO contract by AMSEA, which will continue to operate under AMO contract with Maersk Line Limited - the USNS 2nd Lt. John P. Bobo, USNS Sgt. William R. Button, USNS 1st Lt. Jack Lummus, USNS PFC Dewayne T. Williams, and USNS 1st Lt. Baldomero Lopez.
Lot 5 covers three Kocak Class prepositioning containerships currently operated by a non-AMO company, which will shift to the Maersk Line Limited fleet - the USNS Sgt. Matej Kocak, PFC Eugene A. Obregon and USNS Maj. Stephen W. Pless.
The one remaining lot in the request for proposals (RFP) covering the USNS 1st Lt. Harry L. Martin, which is not currently operated under AMO contract, was awarded to a non-AMO company as a small business set aside.
Periods of performance under the various lot awards are scheduled to commence between mid-2010 and May of 2011. The contracts, with all annual options exercised, can extend until Sept. 30, 2015, according to the RFP.
