Express Marine Inc. in April took delivery of the tug Freedom and expects to take delivery of the barge EMI-2400 in early June, which together will form the articulated tug/barge Freedom.
The Jones Act ATB will carry coal to ports along the U.S. Gulf Coast between New Orleans, La., and Tampa, Fla. American Maritime Officers represents the engineering officers and bargemen in the Express Marine fleet.
"This expansion in both the AMO inland waters job base and Jones Act fleet is a very positive development for both our union and the U.S. maritime industry," said AMO National Executive Board Member for Inland Waters Charles Murdock. "We're looking forward a future of continued excellence with Express Marine aboard this new ATB in a dedicated trade."
The tug Freedom was completed by Patti Shipyard Inc. in Pensacola, Fla., and is currently en route to the West Coast via the Panama Canal to pick up the 480-foot EMI-2400, which is being built by Gunderson Marine Inc. in Portland, Ore.
