AMO-manned Ready Reserve Force ships complete Haiti relief mission

On Friday, the S/S Cape May returned from relief operations in Haiti. The Cape May, the final Maritime Administration Ready Reserve Force vessel to return from Haiti, joined the S/S Cornhusker State in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. The Cape May and Cornhusker State are manned in all licensed positions by American Maritime Officers.

"By all accounts, American maritime expertise and know-how has made a big difference for federal relief officials trying to get supplies into locations with badly-damaged port infrastructure," said Acting Maritime Administrator David Matsuda.

The AMO-manned prepositioning ships USNS 1st Lt. Jack Lummus and USNS PFC Dewayne T. Williams, and the oceanographic survey ship USNS Henson, have also completed their relief operations in Haiti.

"We are grateful for the U.S. merchant mariners who have once again shown their professionalism and reliably performed their duties in support of Operation Unified Response," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.
