New AMO jobs aboard third Maersk Line Limited tanker under U.S. flag

American Maritime Officers will man in all licensed positions a new tanker operated by Maersk Line Limited under U.S. registry. The re-flagging of the Samho Moonstone is expected to be complete in mid-April, at which point the tanker will join the U.S.-flag fleet as the Bro Hawaii.

Maersk Line Limited has been awarded a nine-month time charter for the Bro Hawaii to support U.S. Department of Defense requirements in Asia. The tanker will operate in Asia spot markets, and Maersk Line Limited will supplement U.S. preference cargoes with service to commercial customers.

"We welcome this new tanker and the new jobs it creates for AMO members with Maersk Line Limited," said AMO National President Tom Bethel. "The availability of this vessel and the work available for it under the U.S.-flag demonstrate the value of cargo preference laws to U.S security and to American merchant mariners.

"AMO is looking forward to the opportunity to expand our role in the U.S.-flag fleet and we will continue to work in Washington to ensure U.S. cargo preference laws are maintained and enforced," Bethel said.

Built in 2009, the Samho Moonstone is a small-sized tanker of 5,664 deadweight tons with a capacity of 6,136 cubic meters. The vessel is expected to begin its Asia service in May.
