Congressman Neil Abercrombie (D-HI) has announced he will resign his seat in the House of Representatives representing the Hawaii's 1st Congressional District. He is resigning to focus full-time on campaigning to become Hawaii's next governor.
"Neil Abercrombie stands as one of the strongest proponents of U.S.-flag shipping in Congress. He is a great friend of AMO and to U.S. merchant mariners," said AMO National President Tom Bethel. "His leadership and passion in support of American maritime and the Jones Act are strong and unwavering. His presence will be missed in Congress and we wish him well in his state's upcoming gubernatorial election."
Rep. Abercrombie's resignation from Congress will prompt a special election for his office.
"This is an extremely difficult decision for me, but I must do this to continue with the direction I've chosen for the future," Rep. Abercrombie said. "Accordingly, I've concluded that I must resign my Congressional seat and allow someone to be elected who will carry on the work of this office. The effective date of my resignation will be announced soon."
