New AMO jobs as third State Class tanker Sunshine State is delivered

The Sunshine State — the third tanker in a series being built by General Dynamics NASSCO — was delivered Dec. 3 to American Petroleum Tankers LLC, providing new jobs for members of American Maritime Officers in the Jones Act trades.

Intrepid Personnel and Provisioning is operating the State Class tankers for APT and the ships in the series are manned in all licensed positions by American Maritime Officers.

“AMO is proud to be onboard as delivery of the State Class tankers proceeds ahead of schedule and the Jones Act fleet continues to grow,” said AMO National President Tom Bethel. “These new tankers are generating excellent jobs for AMO members in the domestic trades and bringing valuable tonnage to the U.S. energy and product transportation markets.”

Construction continues on the fourth ship in the series, the Empire State, and the fifth ship in the series, the Evergreen State. The double-hulled petroleum and chemical product tankers in the State Class series are approximately 600-feet-long with a capacity of approximately 331,000 barrels.

“Completed 11 months ahead of our original schedule and under budget, the Sunshine State is the third product carrier NASSCO has delivered this year and reflects greatly upon the skilled shipbuilders in San Diego,” said Fred Harris, president of General Dynamics NASSCO.

Two State Class tankers, the Golden State and Pelican State, are currently in service under charters to major oil companies. Two more of the ships will operate under charter to Military Sealift Command in support of U.S. military missions, replacing two T-5 tankers expected to reach the end of their service lives in 2010.
