Coast Guard issues new guidance for anti-piracy defensive measures

The Coast Guard released a new Port Security Advisory containing supplementary guidance on anti-piracy defensive measures. The advisory does not contradict any guidance provided by Maritime Security (MARSEC) Directive 104-6. Among other things, the advisory suggests masters use heavy wheel movements to expose attacking craft to wind and waves, while taking care not to sacrifice speed.

The Coast Guard also made changes to its guidance on communication during an attack. In addition to the communication procedures outlined by previous directives and the vessel’s security plan, the vessel should make a “mayday” call on VHF channel 16 and send a distress message via Digital Selective Calling (DSC) system and Inmarsat-C, as applicable. Companies should contact USCG Atlantic Area Command Center at (757) 398-6700 in the event of attack.

The complete advisory is available online.
