Robert Magee, chairman and chief executive officer of American Shipping Group, died Monday, Nov. 30. He was 61.
"The maritime industry has lost a great leader and AMO has lost a good friend," said American Maritime Officers National President Tom Bethel.
Magee began working for Totem Ocean Trailer Express in May 1986 as vice president for marine operations. He went on to become president and chief operating officer of Totem Ocean Trailer Express and later chairman of Sea Star Line LLC. He then became chairman and chief operating Officer of American Shipping Group, the holding company for the domestic sea and military support shipping services of Saltchuk Resources.
Throughout his career, he took a leadership role in advocating for and advancing the Jones Act fleet.
"Bob was instrumental in conceiving and overseeing the successful construction and delivery of the Alaska Orca Class ships and was also the champion of the creation of Sea Star," said Tim Engle, president of Saltchuk Resources. "Bob knew and embraced better than anyone else the importance of getting buy-in from all stakeholders in all issues that we faced."
Magee, a Philadelphia native, held a bachelor of science degree in marine transportation from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and an MBA in finance from Widener University.
