NASSCO lays keel for fifth tanker in State Class series

General Dynamics NASSCO announced the keel of the fifth product tanker in the State Class series, the Evergreen State, has been laid at the shipyard in San Diego.

Construction on the ship, named for Washington State, began last May. The double-hulled product tankers in the State Class series each have a capacity of approximately 331,000 barrels.

The ships will operate in Jones Act trades, carrying petroleum and chemical products. Two State Class tankers, the Golden State and Pelican State, are currently in service under charters to major oil companies. Two more of the ships will operate under charter to Military Sealift Command in support of U.S. military missions, replacing two T-5 tankers expected to reach the end of their service lives in 2010.

NASSCO expects to deliver the Evergreen State to American Petroleum Tankers LLC in the fourth quarter of 2010. The State Class tankers are operated for APT by Intrepid Personnel and Provisioning and are manned in all licensed positions by American Maritime Officers.
