AMO-contracted vessels recognized for environmental excellence

More than 60 vessels manned by members of American Maritime Officers were among the 945 recognized in November for achieving at least two years of environmental excellence in operations. Several have gone more than 20 years without an incident. The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) awarded them and others the Environmental Achievement Award.

U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad Allen helped distribute the awards. Criteria for the award include a two-year period with no reportable spills, U.S. Coast Guard or port state citations for violations of MARPOL, or violations of state or local pollution regulations. "These awards celebrate the dedication to environmental excellence of our seafarers and the company personnel shoreside who operate our vessels to the highest standards," said Joseph Cox, President and CEO of CSA. "It should be clear to the American public that we in the maritime industry take our stewardship of the marine environment very seriously."

Companies with vessels receiving recognition at the awards ceremony included American Overseas Marine Corp., Boeing (with a vessel operated by Interocean American Shipping Corp.), Crowley Liner Services, Crowley Petroleum Services (including ships operated by Intrepid Personnel and Provisioning), Interocean American Shipping Corp. (IAS), American Roll-On/Roll-Off Carrier (with vessels operated by IAS), Ocean Shipholdings Inc., OSG Ship Management Inc., Seabulk Tankers Inc., Sea Star Line LLC (with vessels operated by IAS), Teekay Corp. (including vessels operated by Teekay Shipping Ltd.), Totem Ocean Trailer Express (with vessels operated by IAS), and USS Vessel Management LLC. The U.S. Maritime Administration was also honored.
