AMO members honored by United Seamen's Service

The officers and crew of the M/V Midnight Sun were among those honored for heroism Nov. 13 at the Admiral of the Ocean Sea (AOTOS) dinner and awards ceremony hosted in New York City by the United Seamen's Service.

The officers and crew of the Midnight Sun fought and extinguished a fire, preventing the spread of the fire and damage to the ship's cargo, on July 15, 2009. The Midnight Sun is operated in a Jones Act service between Washington State and Alaska by Interocean American Shipping Corp. for Totem Ocean Trailer Express and is manned in all licensed positions by American Maritime Officers. Chief Engineer James Mandato accepted the award on behalf of the officers and crew of the Midnight Sun.

In addition to the Midnight Sun, Honored Seafarer Awards went to the officers and crew of the Maersk Alabama, the officers and crew of the Liberty Sun, officers and crew members of New York Waterway, and the officers and crew of the USNS Lewis & Clark. Victor Manoli III, third mate on the Sealand Quality, received a Mariner's Rosette.

AOTOS Awards were presented to Donald Kurz, president and CEO of Keystone Shipping Company, Ron Widdows, group president and CEO of Neptune Orient Lines, and to the United States Coast Guard.
