Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will include recognition for the service and sacrifice of American merchant mariners in his presentation on Veterans Day at the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Secretary LaHood will give brief remarks and lay a wreath in memory of merchant mariners who served their country in World War II.
The observance will begin at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11 and will include a presentation by keynote speaker Senator Daniel Akaka (D-HI). Also in attendance will be representatives from the White House and U.S. Armed Forces. The public is invited to attend.
The World War II Memorial was one of the first major war memorials to include merchant mariners on equal footing with the armed services.
