AMO National Vice President at Large Michael Murphy elected chairman of ITF Maritime Safety Committee

The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) Oct. 27 in Brussels, Belgium, elected AMO National Vice President at Large Michael Murphy to the chairmanship of the committee.

Murphy has served on the ITF’s Maritime Safety Committee since 2008. The committee formulates labor’s position regarding International Maritime Organization (IMO) conventions. The ITF is a massive labor coalition representing 654 member unions and 4.5 million transportation workers worldwide.

Murphy also serves on the ITF’s delegation to the IMO. The delegation attends IMO meetings to promote labor’s position when the organization addresses various conventions, including SOLAS, ISM, MARPOL, STCW and ISPS.

AMO National President Tom Bethel congratulated Murphy on his appointment. “Mike Murphy does an excellent job representing maritime labor not only in the United States but in international maritime organizations and delegations. With his election to this important committee, we secure a voice at some of the highest decision-making bodies on maritime policy in the world,” Bethel said.

Murphy will hold the post until 2013.
