Members of American Maritime Officers Oct. 19 broke ground for the construction of the union’s first-ever headquarters building in Dania Beach, Fla.
“This was the most appropriate way to begin work on this important project,” AMO National President Tom Bethel said at the construction site. “This property and all others AMO has title to belong to the AMO membership, and the headquarters initiative advanced with membership consent. It was fitting to have seagoing AMO members perform the traditional ceremony.”
Construction of the new AMO headquarters building was approved by a 66-percent margin in a 90-day union-wide secret ballot referendum that ended July 16.
The four-story headquarters building will rise on Federal Highway, across from the sprawling compound that includes the current AMO administrative center, AMO Plans, and the AMO Safety & Education Plan’s Simulation, Training, Assessment and Research Center (STAR Center).
The building will accommodate the AMO administration and the membership services, accounting and editorial departments, and it will include a spacious hall for membership meetings and other events.
The construction project — slated for completion in about one year — is funded with a portion of the proceeds from the recent sale of 6.5 acres of land and buildings owned in Dania Beach by AMO to the AMO Safety and Education Plan.
“This building will allow our union to operate more efficiently, and it will provide greater comfort and convenience for AMO members and their families,” Bethel said. “It will reflect the excellence and professionalism that distinguish AMO members at work in deep-sea, Great Lakes and inland waters trades, and it will stand as a conspicuous reminder of AMO’s status as the nation’s largest union of merchant marine officers.”
Photos of the groundbreaking are available on the AMO Web site.
