Officers, crews of five U.S. vessels to be honored by United Seamen’s Service

The officers and crew of the M/V Midnight Sun will be among those honored for heroism by the United Seamen’s Service (USS) during the 40th annual Admiral of the Ocean Sea dinner Nov. 13 at the New York Sheraton Hotel and Towers.

The officers and crew of Midnight Sun fought and extinguished a fire, preventing the spread of the fire and damage to the ship’s cargo, on July 15, 2009. The Midnight Sun is operated in a Jones Act service between Washington State and Alaska by Interocean American Shipping Corp. for Totem Ocean Trailer Express and is manned in all licensed positions by American Maritime Officers.

In addition to the Midnight Sun, Honored Seafarer Awards will go to the officers and crew of the Maersk Alabama, who fought off a pirate attack while maintaining control of the ship off the coast of Somalia, and whose captain was taken hostage; the officers and crew of the Liberty Sun, who were fired upon but ultimately evaded attacking pirates near the Gulf of Aden; officers and crew members of New York Waterway, who rescued 143 passengers from a downed commercial plane in the Hudson River; and the officers and crew of the USNS Lewis & Clark, who eluded pirates by taking evasive action to prevent an attack off the coast of Somalia.

Third Mate Victor Manoli III will receive a Mariner’s Rosette for fighting and extinguishing a fire and preventing a catastrophic incident onboard the Sealand Quality.

USS also announced the names of those who would be presenting AOTOS Awards during the 2009 dinner. Donald Kurz will receive his award from Philip Fisher, president of Chas, Kurz & Company. Former Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta will present the AOTOS Award to Ron Widdows. Gen. Duncan McNabb, USAF, commander of the U.S. Transportation Command, will present a special AOTOS Award to the United States Coast Guard.
