Transportation Secretary LaHood calls for increased focus on maritime infrastructure

On Sept. 11, 2009, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in a written statement called for a renewed focus on maritime needs in light of the “important” role marine transportation plays in the national economy.

He cited several recent investments that point to the Obama Administration’s and Congress’ renewed interest in maritime infrastructure, including $100 million awarded through the stimulus package for Small Shipyard Grants. Further, the DOT is committed to expanding America’s Marine Highways and thereby generating jobs and reducing gridlock and pollution on our roads, he said.

The Secretary applauded the mariners who eight years ago evacuated an estimated 500,000 people from Manhattan on 9/11. “This nation should be grateful for all they do – whether during a time of crisis, or on a day-to-day basis,” he said.
