Coast Guard opens online portal to verify validity of merchant mariner credentials

The U.S. Coast Guard has created an online portal to verify the validity of a “merchant mariner credential (MMC),” the new consolidated document issued by the Coast Guard combining the license, merchant mariner document, STCW endorsements and certificate of registry.

Intended for mariners, employers and port states, the portal will return only data contained on the actual credential, including basic mariner biographical information, credential type, credential serial number, issue and expiration dates and status, according to the Coast Guard. If the system returns an error, it does not necessarily mean there is something wrong with a credential. Users should contact the National Maritime Center for further information if they receive an error.

Users can search for a credential by using a credential serial number, mariner reference number and last name, or last name, date of birth and last four digits of a social security number.

The Coast Guard noted in a press release that individual legacy credentials will continue to show as valid until the original expiration date, in addition to the MMC. Credentials in ‘continuity status’ will show as valid, but the Coast Guard announced its intention to address this issue in the near future. The merchant mariner credential verification tool is available online. More information on the portal is also available online.
