Captain Michael F. Finnigan: 1963-2021
Captain Mike Finnigan, Master Mariner and beloved figure, both in the U.S. maritime industries and at home, passed away March 19 at age 57 after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage at his home in Palm Coast, FL. Born and raised in Essex, CT, he graduated Valley Regional in Deep River, CT. '81.
Many colleagues and shipmates from his past vessels have expressed and shared the sentiment that Captain Mike was a shining example and a true sailor. One of his proudest achievements was being involved in all aspects of building and becoming Captain onboard the USNS POMEROY.
Adored by all, anyone that knew Captain Mike knew his presence was not only his stature but also his heart. He has blessed and touched the lives of so many through the years. A man of honor and principle, a man who without hesitation would give you the shirt off his back. The great kindness and humor of Captain Finnigan will never be forgotten. A selfless man known for his generosity. Many will share memories of Captain Mike and his incredible work ethic and all that have been graced by his presence over the years will carry on love for the sea. After many years of dedicated time at sea as Captain, Mike became the American Maritime Officers Executive Vice President, January 1, 2019.
When Captain Mike was home, he loved to grill, go skeet shooting, golfing, traveling, helping others, and just spending time with his beloved wife of 15 years, Susan Ziegler Finnigan, and his rescued 'puppy'z', Misty and Snoopy.
Captain Michael F. Finnigan is survived by his wife, Susan Ziegler Finnigan, his mother, Elizabeth Finnigan, of West Bay Nova Scotia, by his brothers and sisters, John and Karen Finnigan, of Dover NH, Mary and Scott Timmis of Portland CT, Eileen and Paul Laroche, of Gardner Mass, many nieces and nephews, by his two loving dogs, Misty and Snoopy, and an endless sea of friends.
Captain Finnigan was preceded in death by his father, John Finnigan, a decorated Korean War veteran and tugboat Captain.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2021 at Clymer Funeral Home, 39 Old Kings Road, Palm Coast FL, 32137, at 1:00 PM. A visitation will be held before the service from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM at Clymer Funeral Home. A virtual Mass will be offered via Zoom by clicking on the link listed below. Due to COVID safety concerns, there will be a simultaneous Celebration of Life reception at Palm Coast VFW at 47 Old Kings Road, Palm Coast FL, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Seafarers International House.
