National Maritime Center bulletin: mailing merchant mariner credential applications to RECs, online user fee payments

The U.S. Coast Guard’s National Maritime Center has published a bulletin outlining procedural changes for mariners mailing application packages for merchant mariner credentials to one of 17 regional examination centers. These changes simplify the application process by enabling mariners to send photocopies of supporting documentation when submitting applications by mail, the Coast Guard reported. The merchant mariner credential is the new consolidated document issued by the Coast Guard combining the license, merchant mariner document, STCW endorsements and certificate of registry.

The bulletin, “Update – Mailing Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) Applications to Regional Examination Centers (RECs) & Pay.Gov User Fee Payment,” provides instructions for paying fees associated with document issuance and renewal online at www.pay.gov. The Coast Guard cannot accept cash or money-order payments submitted with applications mailed to an REC.

The National Maritime Center also announced that, in the near future, the Coast Guard intends to provide a system through which mariners would be able to submit credential applications by e-mail.

This and other National Maritime Center bulletins are available online.
