The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) has announced the recipients of the 2008 Jones F. Devlin Awards, which are presented to companies with vessels that have operated for at least two years without a lost-time injury. The CSA also identified the vessels honored with Ship Safety Achievement Awards for exceptional feats to save lives and aid those in peril during 2008.
The awards were presented June 4, 2009, during the CSA Safety Awards Luncheon in Houston, Texas. More than 160 people representing more than 60 companies and organizations attended the annual industry-sponsored event.
The M/V Courage, operated for American Roll-On/Roll-Off Carrier by Interocean American Shipping Corporation, received a Citation of Merit for the crew’s alertness and good seamanship in responding to a situation June 8, 2008, when they were diverted by the U.S. Coast Guard to rescue three people from the French racing sailboat Motus northwest of the Azores. “Their professional seafaring skills, excellent ship handling and attention to detail led to a successful rescue,” the CSA stated.
Receiving Ship Safety Achievement Letters of Commendation were the M/V Patriot, operated by Interocean American Shipping Corp., the USNS Seay, operated by American Overseas Marine Corporation, and the M/V Presque Isle, operated by Key Lakes Inc.
Among the companies receiving 2008 Devlin Awards June 4 were American Overseas Marine Corp., American Roll-On/Roll-Off Carrier, Boeing, Crescent Towing, Crowley Petroleum Services, Interocean American Shipping Corp., Keystone Shipping (Key Lakes Inc.), Maersk Line Limited, Ocean Shipholdings, OSG Ship Management, Seabulk Tankers, Seabulk Towing, Sea Star Line, Teekay Corporation, Totem Ocean Trailer Express and USS Vessel Management LLC. The U.S. Maritime Administration was also recognized for two ships operated by Interocean American Shipping Corp.
The Chamber of Shipping of America represents 33 U.S.-based companies that own, operate or charter oceangoing tankers, containerships and other merchant vessels engaged in both the domestic and international trades, as well as entities that maintain a commercial interest in the operation of such vessels.
