STAR Center adds new course, High Voltage Safety, to curriculum

STAR Center has added a new U.S. Coast Guard approved, STCW compliant five-day marine High Voltage Safety course to the curriculum.

This course is intended to provide credentialed engineering officers and electro-technical officers - having duties and management responsibilities for the operation, safety, and management of shipboard high-voltage (HV) electrical power plants above 1,000 volts - with the increased knowledge and heightened hazard awareness required to comply with the functional, operational and unique safety requirements of marine high voltage (HV) propulsion power plants.

This course satisfies the requirements of:
  • 46 CFR 11.335 and the high voltage training requirements for endorsement as electro-technical officer on vessels powered by main propulsion machinery of 750kW/1,000 HP or more.
  • The practical assessments conducted in this course are accepted as the equivalent to the following assessments from the National Assessment Guidelines:
    • Table A-III/1 of the STCW Code and the Tasks listed in NVIC 17-14 CH 1 as Tasks: 6.1.E and 7.3.A
    • Table A-III/3 of the STCW Code and the Tasks listed in NVIC 16-14 as Task: 5.1.D
    • Table A-III/6 of the STCW Code and the Tasks listed in NVIC 23-14 as Tasks: 1.8.A, 4.1.A, 4.1.B, and 4.1.C
    • Table A-III/7 of the STCW Code and the Tasks listed in NVIC 24-14 as Tasks: 1.1.A and 1.1.B
Start dates are:
  • October 21, 2019
  • January 27, 2020
This course is open to all AMO member and applicant engineering officers, particularly those having duties and responsibilities for the operation and safety of shipboard electrical power plants of above 1,000 volts (1 kV), including those with management responsibilities. Requests for this course by deck officers will be handled on a case-by-case basis so as not to displace an engineer. All officers who are afforded a seat in the course will be advised that, as a course prerequisite, it is assumed that each applicant has a strong understanding of electricity and shipboard electrical systems before taking the course.
