STAR Center has launched its new on-campus fire training simulator with the completion of the first Basic Training Revalidation course on March 11 - a landmark day for the AMO Safety and Education Plan's training center in Dania Beach, Fla. and the members of American Maritime Officers who attend courses there.
A campus addition 18 months in the making, the new fire fighting training simulator has received U.S. Coast Guard site approval and will be able to accommodate all the necessary fire training needs for AMO members, including Military Sealift Command firefighting.
The new Fire Field will be used for a multitude of Coast Guard required courses and license upgrading programs, including:
In the past, STAR Center has had to contract with outside vendors to provide for the training needs of AMO members, and often times, those contractors would dictate when classes could be scheduled. With the class facilities now onsite, STAR Center not only eliminates an expensive contracting cost, but has the flexibility to schedule as many firefighting classes as often as necessary to meet the needs of the membership, STAR Center Director Brian Long said.
STAR Center intends to increase the availability of slots in firefighting classes, particularly Revalidation, as soon as possible.
Another bonus for AMO is that the simulator was created with mariners in mind. The maritime design of the simulator will provide real-world experience that will be vital to AMO members at sea.
The advanced fire simulator training unit and additional features were designed by Fireblast Global. The new Fire Field and simulator have the ability to replicate shipboard firefighting scenarios above and below decks. The helicopter props can simulate helicopter firefighting operations and deck fires.
"There is tremendous potential to use the new simulator to build on our USCG and MSC approvals and enhance the overall training for AMO members," Pannell said.
