National Maritime Center continues limited processing of applications for renewal of STCW Medical Certificates during partial government shutdown


On a limited basis, the National Maritime Center continues to accept renewal applications for expired or expiring STCW Medical Certificates during the partial government shutdown. The U.S. Coast Guard previously extended the validity of expiring U.S. domestic Medical Certificates until March 31, 2019 in a separate notice.

Please note the following:

  • This applies to STCW Medical Certificates only
  • Do not use this limited capability if your certificate has not expired or is not expiring in the next 45 days
  • Applications (as PDF file attachments only) are being processed at the National Maritime Center only, and are not being accepted by Regional Exam Centers
  • Due to the staffing situation during the shutdown, applications are being processed for mariners with current physicals who have no medical issues or medical waivers
  • Applications must be sent by e-mail as PDF files to
