The State University of New York Maritime College training ship Empire State VI is underway to Puerto Rico as part of the vessel's ongoing hurricane relief mission.
The ship, which is being operated by AMO-contracted TOTE Services, Inc., was originally tasked to assist with Hurricane Harvey relief efforts in Beaumont, Texas, but was diverted for Hurricane Irma relief operations in Key West, Fla.
The Empire State departed New York September 12 and arrived at the pier in Key West on September 17. The ship departed Key West September 28 and will soon arrive in Puerto Rico, where it will be assigned a port depending on needs and conditions upon arrival.
The ship's mission will be to house and feed relief workers to keep local resources on the ground open and available for residents as the relief efforts continue.
