AMO membership dues, initiation fees will not increase in 2017

Membership dues and initiation fees in American Maritime Officers will not increase in 2017.

This decision to hold the line on dues and fees was based on a review of our union's finances by AMO National Secretary-Treasurer Charles Murdock and AMO Controller Thom Heaton. It was reported to and approved unanimously by AMO members during the regularly scheduled AMO membership meeting at headquarters in Dania Beach, FL, on November 7.

2017 will be the third consecutive year without an increase in AMO membership dues and initiation fees.

This reflects sustained sound management of our union since January 2015. Operating expenses have been pared by nearly $2 million, with the bulk of the savings carved from payroll - including significant salary reductions for the top four elected AMO officials.

AMO on November 1 had a six-figure surplus in its operating account, holding to a budget pattern set early in 2015, when surpluses developed month-to-month for the first time in years. This allowed the cancellation of a 2015 dues increase approved late in 2014.

Our union on November 1 also had a six-figure sum in a reserve account.

In 2015, AMO began depositing money into its investment account for the first time since May 2013, and the investment fund balance November 1 was in the high seven figures.

These substantial gains also reflect a sharp and steady increase in timely AMO membership dues payments and initiation fee installments since January 2015, both directly to AMO and through authorized deductions from benefits provided by the AMO Vacation Plan. I am grateful to AMO members everywhere for helping to restore financial stability and security to our union.

As always, I welcome AMO membership input on this or any other issue. I can be reached on the headquarters office line at 954-921-2221 (ext. 1001), toll free at 800-362-0513, or on my cell at 954-881-5651.

Thank you.
