RESCUE OF 14 CREW EX FISHING BOAT OM SAI DATTA OFF MUMBAI - 17 SEP 2016


The following letter dated September 20 was sent to Captain Yann Durieux, Master on the C.S. Dependable, by Additional Director General K. Natarajan, Coast Guard Commander (Western Seaboard).
  1. With deep appreciation, I am writing this missive to bring to the notice of all concerned regarding the role played by your esteemed crew, with you at the helm, in saving 14 precious lives at sea.
  2. Recapturing the event on 17 Sep 16, Fishing Boat Om Sai Datta (Registration No. IND-MH-01-4010) with 16 crew onboard (all Indian) whilst engaged in fishing activity off Mumbai capsized in position 18 48 N 072 16 E at 0648 UTC. Your ship, MV Dependable (IMO no 9242352) whilst on passage sighted [a person in the water] and prudently informed ICG ship in the area.
  3. In the best traditions of seamen practices MV Dependable, unmindful of the rough sea, swiftly responded in locating the 14 survivors in the water of the sunken Fishing Boat Om Sai Datta and recovering them. On arrival of Coast Guard ship in area, all rescued crew were safely handed over before resuming passage on 17 Sep 16.
  4. The proactive and timely response of MV Dependable, which aided in the rescue operation of the crew of distressed Fishing boat Om Sai Datta, is in accordance with the best traditions of Mariners and well appreciated.
  5. I, on behalf of the Indian Coast Guard, convey my best regards and sincere gratitude for the kind act in rescuing the distressed crew. The initiative taken by you as Master of the vessel is indeed laudable.
