Reminder: USCG revisions to NVIC 04-08 - Medical and Physical Evaluation Guidelines for Merchant Mariner Credentials

The U.S. Coast Guard has released "change 2" to NVIC 04-08 - Medical and Physical Evaluation Guidelines for Merchant Mariner Credentials, which contains several revisions that will affect members of American Maritime Officers.

Change 2 includes multiple enclosures that contain specific guidance on, among other things, the evaluation of medical conditions and medications as they relate to a mariner's eligibility for a U.S. Coast Guard Medical Certificate and the need for obtaining a medical waiver in order to maintain the validity of a Merchant Mariner Credential.

Enclosure 6, which is page 89 of the document released by the Coast Guard, outlines a new formalized review process that will be used to evaluate each mariner's application for a USCG Medical Certificate based upon the accompanying definitions and guidelines regarding medical conditions and medications contained in the other enclosures. As part of the description of the review process, the time restrictions for appealing a denial of medical certification are listed.

The complete document is available on the AMO Currents website.
