Maritime industry salutes Senator Wicker

On May 11, members of U.S. maritime labor and industry gathered to honor Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS), who was presented with the 2016 Salute to Congress Award by the International Propeller Club of the United States.

During his acceptance speech, Sen. Wicker reaffirmed his support for the U.S. maritime industry and commented on the importance of the American maritime sector to national defense, security and commerce.

"Mississippi will always support the Jones Act," Sen. Wicker said. "I understand how important it is to the American economy and it's an integral part of this country's national security."

The Salute to Congress Award recognizes a member of Congress each year for supporting the maritime industry and merchant marine. Sen. Wicker is the 32nd recipient of the award.

"I appreciate this recognition by the International Propeller Club and the work it does on behalf of our merchant marine," Sen. Wicker said. "The value of the U.S. maritime industry cannot be overstated. Our mariners, shipyards, and Coast Guard are essential to keeping our economy strong and protecting our nation. I will continue to support efforts that advance this crucial part of America's transportation system."

Sen. Wicker is a senior member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, which has jurisdiction over interstate commerce, the Coast Guard, inland waterways, and the merchant marine. He is a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and serves as chairman of the Subcommittee on Seapower. He is a member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, which recently passed a new water resources bill aimed at making targeted investments to the nation's ports and waterways. He serves on the Board of Visitors for both the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the Coast Guard Academy.

Sen. Wicker was introduced at the Salute to Congress event by former Mississippi Republican Senator and Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, who received the Salute to Congress Award in 1997. Sen. Lott commended Sen. Wicker for his leadership and advocacy on maritime issues.

"We need more like him in Congress," Sen. Lott said.
