Sealift LLC has been awarded a time charter by Military Sealift Command for a containership serving the U.S. Army. Sealift is in the process of upgrading the containership Cap Spencer to serve this mission.
The Cap Spencer will be reflagged into U.S. registry and renamed the M/V SSG Edward A. Carter, Jr. in honor of the Medal of Honor recipient as it replaces the incumbent ship serving this mission, which is operated by Maersk Line, Limited. The ship is scheduled for delivery in May.
"We're pleased with the decision to continue with the name of the ship," said John Raggio, partner at Sealift LLC. "We take care to do everything possible to prepare the ship for five years of dedicated service to the Armed Forces. Our goal is to deliver a first class vessel to the military."
The contract for the mission includes a one-year firm period and four optional extensions, which if exercised, would bring the duration of the charter to approximately five years.
American Maritime Officers represents all licensed officers aboard the M/V Carter with the incumbent operator and will represent all licensed officers aboard the ship to be operated by Sealift LLC in this mission.
