Coast Guard holds ribbon cutting ceremony for National Maritime Center in Martinsburg

The U.S. Coast Guard hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony and dedication on Thursday for the National Maritime Center in Martinsburg, W. Va.

Although the NMC is not yet fully staffed, it is fully operational and houses the U.S. Merchant Mariner Licensing and Documentation and the Merchant Mariner Training Course Approval and Oversight Programs. The NMC is expected to employ approximately 200 military, federal civilian and contract employees once fully staffed. The NMC moved from the temporary site in Kearneysville to the Martinsburg facility once construction was completed, according to the Coast Guard.

The NMC is the central hub where completed applications are processed and from which corresponding documents and credentials are issued to mariners the Coast Guard determines are qualified. The 17 regional exam centers operate as storefronts for the approximately 212,000 actively employed merchant mariners requiring Coast Guard documentation and licensing, according to the Coast Guard.

The General Services Administration and the Coast Guard worked in partnership to construct the NMC with developer JDL Castle Corp. and Mackie Johnson Architects, both of North Carolina, Bristol Group Construction of Kentucky and MBP Construction Engineering Inc. of Virginia. The building is owned by JDL Martinsburg LLC, an affiliate of JDL Castle Corp., and is leased by the Coast Guard at a cost of $30 million over the next 20 years, according to the Coast Guard.

The National Maritime Center is commanded by Coast Guard Capt. David Stalfort. More information about the Coast Guard NMC is available online at http://www.uscg.mil/stcw.
