LNG, tankship observation programs provide new opportunities for AMO members

Members of American Maritime Officers interested in pursuing new opportunities in the international energy transportation trades, including LNG shipping, can immediately begin advancing their careers by taking advantage of the online resources and exclusive observation programs provided by AMO.

Over the past two years, AMO has signed memoranda of understanding with a major energy company, Shell, and a major shipping company, Teekay, providing AMO officers with new job opportunities in international fleets. AMO has also established an exclusive LNG observation program for AMO officers with BGT Limited, and a dangerous liquids observation program with TORM. These agreements establish a pipeline, providing AMO officers with access to new employment opportunities and the ability to earn the necessary seatime and endorsements to work in international crude, product, chemical tanker and LNG trades. Additional manning and observation agreements are currently under negotiation.

To take advantage of these opportunities, AMO members should:

  • Plot a position on the FLOW (Future LNG Officer Waypoints) diagram—the FLOW diagram is available on the AMO home page at www.amo-union.org. FLOW will assist in determining which courses and STCW endorsements are needed to meet the prerequisites of the DL or LNG observation program of interest. Members/applicants should refer to the LNG Career Path Guidance for AMO members online to obtain further information on required courses and observer requirements with regulatory references.

  • If the prerequisites have been met and an observation billet is the next step, complete an individual CHART profile on the AMO Dispatching Web site at https://www.amodispatching.com. Members/applicants should refer to the CHART system overview and instruction document online, which was developed to assist members in completing their chart profile.

  • Submit your CHART CV/resumé and STAR Center training record to AMO Director of New Business Development Tom Laird by . This information will be reviewed by the Observation Advisory Board, the responsibilities of which are to review documentation for completeness and prioritize a pool of observer candidates.

  • Follow updates for new observation billets, which are available through a link on the AMO home page at www.amo-union.org.

  • Contact Tom Laird when a billet of interest appears and is consistent with your availability.

The coursework necessary to meet the prerequisites of the AMO observation programs is available to AMO members at STAR Center.
