The U.S. Coast Guard has issued a revision to its policy for vessel owners and operators to request an extension for implementation of ballast water management methods, a move that should simplify the process for companies faced with the lack of available approved ballast water management systems.
Under the new policy, the application to get an extension has been streamlined, vessels no longer have to submit a ballast water management plan and the Coast Guard has removed the five-year limit for extensions, among other things. In a policy letter dated September 25, 2013, the U.S. Coast Guard had explained how vessel owners and operators could apply for an extension to implement ballast water management discharge standards, which went into effect in June 2012.
Vessel owners must still show they have made every reasonable effort to comply with the new ballast water management rules and the application for an extension must be submitted 12 months in advance. To read the entire Coast Guard notice, click here.
