Slots are available in the Leadership and Management course at STAR Center beginning July 27. This course fulfills a gap closing requirement under STCW 2010. American Maritime Officers members and applicants who need this course to complete their gap closing training are encouraged to submit an application to attend.
As a reminder, all AMO members and applicants who need an STCW endorsement on their Merchant Mariner Credential must complete the required STCW 2010 gap closing training prior to December 31, 2016. Merchant mariners who require an STCW endorsement and who do not complete this training will not be eligible for employment on or after January 1, 2017.
All AMO members and applicants are urged to complete any gap closing training they will need as soon as possible and before September 2016.
In order to account for the time the application process will take for the U.S. Coast Guard to remove any STCW limitations on a Merchant Mariner Credential after gap closing training has been completed, STAR CENTER STRONGLY RECOMMENDS ALL MEMBERS COMPLETE GAP CLOSING COURSES AND SUBMIT AN APPLICATION TO THE COAST GUARD NO LATER THAN SEPTEMBER 2016.
STAR Center has planned and scheduled sufficiently to ensure all AMO members and applicants will be able to enroll in the required gap closing courses well ahead of the deadline. HOWEVER, an analysis of enrollment trends indicates the number of AMO members and applicants attending gap closing courses has fallen behind the level needed to ensure all affected members will be able to complete the required training.
AMO MEMBERS AND APPLICANTS WHO DELAY REGISTERING FOR STCW 2010 GAP CLOSING COURSES UNTIL NEXT YEAR MAY FIND THE COURSES THEY NEED ARE COMPLETELY FULL.
Please be advised STAR Center will be unable to ensure gap closing course requirements can be met for anyone who applies to register after September 2016.
