Third new ATB in U.S. Shipping series enters service this month


The third articulated tug/barge (ATB) in the series U.S. Shipping Partners is building for the Jones Act trades will enter service this month, the company announced.

The tug Brownsville and barge Petrochem Trader were delivered on schedule and the final commissioning of the new ATB took place Nov. 19 in Sturgeon Bay, Wis. The Brownsville/Petrochem Trader will operate as part of the company's chemical fleet.

Already in service are the new U.S. Shipping ATB units Freeport and Galveston. American Maritime Officers represents all licensed officers working in the U.S. Shipping fleet.

"The delivery of the third ATB demonstrates our continuing commitment to our customers to modernize our fleet by adding new double-hulled vessels in both the refined petroleum products and chemical markets," said U.S. Shipping Partners L.P. President and CEO Ron O'Kelley. "The fourth and final ATB in this series is currently scheduled for delivery in November 2009 and the first joint venture product tanker is scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2009. These newbuilds, together with scheduled retirements and sales of our ITB fleet, will ensure that the Partnership will have one of the most modern versatile fleets in the Jones Act trade."

U.S. Shipping Partners also announced it has sold the ITB Jacksonville in the fourth quarter of 2008.
