Draft guidance released for masters, vessel operators regarding large-scale rescue operations at sea

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) is circulating a draft copy of the second edition of Large Scale Rescue Operations at Sea: Guidance on Ensuring the Safety and Security of Seafarers and Rescued Persons.

This shipping industry guidance was initially published in 2014 by the ICS in response to the large number of migrants attempting to get to Europe and requiring rescue by merchant ships in the Mediterranean. The draft document has been updated with support from the International Transport Workers' Federation and takes into account the recent experience of shipping companies, masters and crews.

In addition to guidance on legal obligations, logistical requirements and procedural recommendations, the draft document includes several useful slides for vessels and crews participating in a rescue operation.

The draft document is available for download on the AMO Currents website. When the draft document is approved and a final document released, a bulletin and link will be circulated via AMO Currents.
