U.S. Shipping Partners L.P. and APL Maritime Ltd. each received the Rear. Adm. William M. Benkert Marine Environmental Award for Excellence from the U.S. Coast Guard this week.
The Benkert Awards were presented by Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad Allen during the American Petroleum Institute luncheon in San Diego, Calif. U.S. Shipping was among companies receiving the silver award and APL Maritime Ltd. was among companies receiving the bronze award. Both companies operate vessels manned in all licensed positions by American Maritime Officers.
The award recognizes maritime industry businesses and corporations that have demonstrated sustained excellence and outstanding achievement in protecting the marine environment. The award program also encourages innovations in operations, maintenance, cargo handling, refueling, training and the sharing of best practices throughout the industry.
