After evaluating recent enrollment data for STCW 2010 gap closing training, STAR Center and American Maritime Officers are renewing the call for all AMO members and applicants to complete the required STCW gap closing courses as soon as practical and well in advance of the December 31, 2016 deadline.
STAR Center has been providing U.S. Coast Guard approved gap closing training since December 1, 2014 to meet the Coast Guard's requirements for the implementation of STCW 2010. Enrollment at STAR Center has increased dramatically and the school continues to operate above 100 percent capacity.
However, an analysis of recent enrollment data indicates that, statistically, the number of AMO members completing gap closing training at present may result in a disproportionate number of members needing to complete the training much closer to the December 31, 2016 deadline.
AMO members and applicants who wait to enroll for this U.S. Coast Guard required training may find that gap closing courses are filled and unavailable as the deadline approaches. Accordingly, the union and the AMO Safety and Education Plan urge all AMO members to enroll and complete the gap closing courses as soon as practical.
STAR Center has published comprehensive guidance for meeting the requirements of STCW 2010. This information is available on the STAR Center website. In the STCW 2010 section of the STAR Center website, detailed guidance is available for AMO deck and engineering officers on:
However, the data indicates that the AMO membership is statistically behind the targeted goals in completing the Leadership & Management and Management of Electrical, Electronic Controllers gap closing courses at present, which may result in a disproportionate number of AMO members needing to complete these courses later next year.
As a reminder, STAR Center will need all students to register at least two weeks in advance to attend courses, including license upgrading programs and Radar Recertification training. STAR Center will probably not be able to accommodate same-day and walk-in course registration requests.
The number of students at the school is exceeding the on-site housing capacity and STAR Center is utilizing local hotels to meet the demand. At this time of year in South Florida, STAR Center must make non-refundable reservations for students at local hotels at least two weeks in advance. As a result, STAR Center will not always be able to accept applications for enrollment with less than two weeks' notice.
Questions regarding these courses should be directed to STAR Center Director of Member Training and Officer Development Jerry Pannell at (800) 942-3220 ext. 7507 or via .
Enrollment questions or applications should be directed to Student Services at (800) 942-3220 ext. 201 or via .
The STAR Center enrollment application is available online.
