IMO secretary-general appeals to UN Security Council for action on piracy

In a briefing to the United Nations Security Council, International Maritime Organization Secretary-General Efthimios Mitropoulos called for a coordinated and cohesive response to combat piracy off the coast of Somalia.

According to an IMO report on the briefing, Mitropoulos outlined a series of actions for the Security Council to consider to protect seafarers, fishermen and passengers on ships sailing off the coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden; ensure the safe delivery of humanitarian aid to Somalia by ships chartered by the World Food Program; and preserve the integrity of the shipping lane through the Gulf of Aden, given its strategic importance and significance to shipping and trade east and west of the Suez Canal. The report is available on the IMO Web site at: http://www.imo.org.
