The Lake Carriers' Association and the U.S. Coast Guard 9th District, headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, signed a mutual training agreement (MTA) earlier this month that will allow U.S. Coast Guard marine inspectors to join a vessel's crew while underway and act as riding observers.
This MTA applies to all companies that operate vessels under contract with American Maritime Officers on the Great Lakes.
According to a joint statement issued by the U.S. Coast Guard 9th District and the Lake Carriers' Association, the MTA will provide inspectors with a practical knowledge of the performance and operating characteristics of the vessels and equipment and the waterways they transit, as well as the work of vessel crews, in the Great Lakes maritime industry.
