Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster affirms importance of Jones Act

In keynote remarks to the Gulf Intracoastal Canal Association earlier this month, Congressman Bill Shuster (R-PA), chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, affirmed the importance of the Jones Act to the national economy, the American Waterways Operators reported.

Rep. Shuster acknowledged the significant investments made by the industry in Jones Act qualified vessels, creating a vibrant U.S. maritime industry that makes great contributions to the national economy through the work of American shipyards, vessel operating companies and crews.

Rep. Shuster also cited a recent editorial authored by Congressmen Steve Scalise (R-LA), House majority whip, and Duncan Hunter (R-CA), chairman of the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation. The editorial hails the Jones Act as a commercial and a public policy success vital to U.S. economic, national and homeland security interests.

Rep. Shuster also addressed the recent enactment of the Water Resources Reform and Development Act and the need for improvements to domestic maritime infrastructure.
