We are grateful to the American Maritime Officers members who voted for us in the balloting that concluded June 24. We respect the decisions made by AMO members who preferred other candidates.
This administration will continue to represent all deep-sea, Great Lakes and inland waters members effectively, openly and honestly. We will continue to promote the free exchange of ideas, honest disagreement on policy issues, and diversity of opinion. We will remain accessible and accountable.
In addition, we will remain focused on job and benefit security for all AMO members and their families in both the traditional domestic and foreign trades our union dominates and in emerging international markets that provide unprecedented, unequaled opportunities for the seagoing AMO membership.
We thank all AMO members who participated in this important election. We appreciate their interest and their patience. Like them, we are anxious to move at long last past the controversies that preceded and marked this election. Like AMO members everywhere, we are anxious to do the jobs entrusted to us.
And we thank Dan Smith, who devoted more than 30 years to our union on the Great Lakes, and who was instrumental in pulling American Maritime Officers through its most trying time. We will miss Dans official service, and we wish Dan and his wife, Bonnie, well in all they pursue together.
