Maritime Trades Department calls for passage of Employee Free Choice Act

The Maritime Trades Department, AFL-CIO, is joining with the rest of labor to call for passage of the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) when the next Congress convenes in January 2009.

This is part of the AFL-CIO's overall effort to garner at least 1 million signatures through its Million Member Mobilization, launched earlier this spring. International unions, state federations and central labor councils are working together all across the country to meet and exceed the challenge.

The Employee Free Choice Act would strengthen penalties for companies that coerce or intimidate employees trying to form unions and bargain; establish mediation and binding arbitration when the employer and workers cannot agree on a first contract; and enable employees to form a union when a majority of workers sign authorization cards.

Members of American Maritime Officers are encouraged to participate in the Million Member Mobilization in support of the Employee Free Choice Act. To obtain a signature card for supporting the Million Member Mobilization, contact your American Maritime Officers official or representative.
