Don Cree retires after 44 years with AMO

Donald N. Cree, a longtime member and official of American Maritime Officers, retired May 31 after 44 years of membership and service.

Cree, who holds a chief engineer's license, joined AMO in 1970 and sailed in the Great Lakes, inland waters and deep-sea sectors before joining the AMO administration in 1996.

"Don Cree sailed for most of his career on the Great Lakes with American Steamship Co. and its various units, including Cleveland Tankers - yes, Don is old enough to remember when there was U.S.-flag tanker service between Great Lakes ports," said AMO National President Tom Bethel. "But Don also sailed deep-sea with Cove Tankers and inland with Jones & Laughlin Steel, Dravo Mechling, Standard Sand & Gravel, U.S. Steel and Consolidation Coal Company. Don's talents are as diverse as his seagoing work record."

Cree, 63, came ashore to serve in the AMO administration 18 years ago, advancing from representative to executive board member, Great Lakes assistant vice president and Great Lakes vice president. In January 2011, Cree was appointed as special assistant to the president for the Great Lakes, the position he held through his retirement.

Cree also served as a trustee or alternate trustee of the AMO Medical, Pension, Vacation and Safety & Education Plans and the Joint Employment Committee and the Audit Committee.

"Don Cree brought skill and real enthusiasm to each official position he held in our union," Bethel said. "His dedication to lasting job and benefit security for all AMO members and their families was immeasurable. I accept Don's retirement reluctantly, but I know I will be able to call on Don anytime for his advice or his opinion. I wish Don and his wife, Mary Jane, well in all they do."
